I’m a 42 year old mother of 2. Yesterday, I *slept in* until 4:30am, got my babies up and fed, planned an Easter brunch menu, finished a batch of rewrites, worked all day writing more comics than you, managed to sneak in 30 minutes on the treadmill and a quick shower before grabbing my hilarious and brilliant husband, two amazing children and double-batch potluck dish and heading to a seder at the home of two of our best friends, where I *rocked* playing with my daughter and her new bow & arrow out on the porch.

Kate Bishop is great. I love Kate. But she’s a fiction, sweetheart, and she’s no fucking me.

I love this routine, because it’s not a rape joke. It’s a rape culture joke. It’s not making fun of the people who have been raped, but of both rape culture (not being able to just jog because it’s not safe) but of the idea that the only thing of value in a woman is her vagina.

A few weeks ago, my friend Emily of Rosie Says almost broke the internet with her article on Role/Reboot: A Letter To The Guy Who Harassed Me Outside The Bar. It’s a fantastic piece that cogently and calmly articulates why being on the receiving end of “jokes” and “compliments” from strange men is rarely a funny or flattering experience. Response to this piece was overwhelming, and Emily has been documenting a lot of the feedback, both negative and positive.

Today, she posted A Letter To The Girl I Harassed, a response from a male reader that attempts to flip the perspective once again and give us insight into the mind of a harasser. While the writer admits that his attitude is not healthy, he feels that other guys will relate to it. Emily says she finds the piece disturbing and a little scary, but mainly sad, and uses it is a call for empathy on all fronts. My reaction was less kind. For me, this letter reads as a steaming pile of entitlement and essentialism and I find the “predator/prey zero sum game” narrative kind of terrifying. But there is one paragraph that really stuck out to me.

“Being in the presence of a woman can be anguish. It’s loneliness (and sometimes horniness), and all that other Freudian bullshit rolled up into mundane moments. Just walking down the street can make me feel helpless when I pass a woman sometimes. I can’t shake it. If I could shake it, I would. Trust me. It’s no fun. But this is the hand I’m dealt, so I roll with it.”

If you think women are people, it would be apparent to you that they are probably also insecure and awkward and lonely for a host of their own private and personal reasons. You would be able to experience the empathy that Emily calls for in her post. You would not be able to read a letter about the persistent and often scary harassment that women deal with on a daily basis and then turn the conversation back to your boner and how sad it is that you have to be an asshole to all those women who are causing you so much anguish because they don’t want to talk to you. The net effect of all of this is that female casual hockey fans become alienated much more quickly and thoroughly. It’s very easy to become discouraged, after all, when you provide an opinion in a debate about the sport - whether well thought out or not - and the person on the opposing side derails you by talking down to you because you’re a girl. You might not know all your stuff, but frankly, the person on the opposing side probably doesn’t know all his stuff either, and the likelihood is that only one of you is going to get disrespected for it.

i thought this was one of the most important things obama said today. i don’t understand why so many have all-or-nothing/black-and-white perspectives when there exist so many shades of grey in life. it’s always worth fighting for progress, even when only small steps are gained.
